Disney's Strange World has risen on Disney+ after sinking in theaters. The animated feature film premiered in theaters at the tail end of November, but most filmgoers either didn't know about its release due to poor marketing, or the film's premise as told by the trailer just wasn't exciting enough to get people heading to the theater to see Strange World en masse. In any case, the movie's box office performance was disastrous, with Disney's reported losses reaching nearly $150 million.

Given this poor performance, Strange World was released on Disney+ much more quickly than it normally takes for theatrical releases to switch over to streaming. It premiered on Disney+ on Dec. 23, one month to the day after its theatrical premiere. It's comparatively garnering much more attention from Disney+ subscribers than movie theater patrons, as after a week's time, Strange World is ranking high at the No. 1 movie on Disney+ (via FlixPatrol).

Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl is in the No. 2 spot while the original Avatar sits at No. 3, as its new sequel The Way of Water has had many fans revisiting the previous movie. Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York are in the following spots, as the holiday classics always come back to the forefront when fans revisit the movies every Christmas season. Meanwhile, the top 5 TV shows on Disney+, in order, are Bluey, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Grey's Anatomy, and Willow.

It's easy to speculate why Strange World underperformed with its release. One star of the movie, Gabrielle Union, agrees with the theory that Strange World was a movie people preferred to watch at home. It's hard to say exactly how much the wait for streaming affected the film's box office performance, but it seems to have done so to a certain extent, given how quickly the movie rose to the top of the charts on Disney+.

Along with Union, the voice cast for Strange World includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, and Lucy Liu. Don Hall and Qui Nguyen direct while Roy Conli produced. The film's official synopsis is as follows.

The feature film introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures.
