There will be only one more season to look forward to for Stranger Things fans after season 4 arrives this week, but the franchise could very well live on past the fifth and final season. As it stands, there are no immediate plans at Netflix to develop any spinoff movies or shows set in the world of Stranger Things. For now, the focus seems to be on getting season 5 finished in a way that concludes the main story in the most satisfying way possible.
Be that as it may, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have been thinking about what they could potentially do with Stranger Things after wrapping up the series with season 5. In an interview with Variety, they admit that they have come up with one particular concept that has them "super excited." While they haven't shared this idea with the cast and crew, the Duffer Brothers also revealed that Finn Wolfhard still knows what they have in store, as the actor somehow managed to predict their spinoff idea. As the siblings explain:
"We do have an idea for a spinoff that we’re super excited about … but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it. We think everyone — including Netflix — will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it’s very, very different. But somehow Finn Wolfhard — who is one crazy smart kid — correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”
Back in February, the Duffer Brothers similarly teased a potential spinoff. At that time, they noted how their main focus will be on writing and developing the show's fifth and final season, though they teased new stories to be told with some "new unexpected heroes." From a Netflix blog post:
“There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes,” the Duffers wrote in a Feb. 17 post on Netflix’s blog that announced the split of Stranger Things 4 and the fact that the fifth season would be its final. But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a powerful girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down. As always, we are grateful for your patience and support.”
Stranger Things Season 4 Will Be Supersized
Consisting of nine episodes, season 4 will be the longest yet of Stranger Things. The first six episodes will run at around 75 minutes each while episodes 7 and 8 are feature length, clocking in at 98 minutes and 85 minutes, respectively. The season finale will be a whopping 150 minutes long.
The first volume of Stranger Things season 4 will debut on Netflix on May 27, 2022. Volume 2 will follow on July 1, 2022.
