Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer has teased the spectacle that will be shot into the eyeballs of Netflix viewers everywhere when the hugely popular series returns for the second part of season 4. Speaking with Empire, Duffer revealed that Stranger Things Season 4 Part 2 will feature more special effects shots than the whole of the third season. A season that ended with the gang battling the Mind Flayer at the Starcourt Mall.

“The final episode has more FX shots than the entirety of Season 3.”

While specific details of the Stranger Things Season 4 finale remain a closely guarded secret, we know that the episode will be epic in scope, clocking in at 2 hours and 19 minutes long. Fellow Stranger Things co-creator Ross Duffer teased some of the events of the last episode, offering some insight into the show’s most grandiose sequence to date.

“There’s an hour-long chunk in the final episode that just doesn’t stop. It’s the most complicated thing we’ve ever attempted to do. [It's] all tension and dread, with a run-time that would be long even for a movie. Then – well, everything goes to hell.”

Based on that final line, it certainly sounds like we will be spending a lot of time in The Upside Down in part 2 — a suggestion that does not come as too much of a surprise seeing as Stranger Things Season 4 has shown us far more of the alternate world than before.

Stranger Things Season 4 Part 2 Will See the Gang Take the Fight to Vecna

Stranger Things Vecna

Stranger Things Season 4 picks up around six months after the events of season 3. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends is separated for the first time, and during this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces. Known as Vecna, the final moments of Season 4 Part 1 reveal the shocking identity of this creature from the Upside Down. He is One, as in the One to Eleven’s number 11, and the first super-powered child ever experimented on by Dr. Martin Brenner. Now that Eleven knows who Vecna is, Ross Duffer has revealed that she will take the fight to number One.

“One of our favourite things in horror films is seeing our protagonists be proactive. You know in The Lost Boys when they decide to go after the vampires? It’s fun to see people come up with a plan and try to outsmart the villain. That’s what Volume 2 is about. But of course, not everything goes to plan.”

Starring Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Matthew Modine Paul Reiser, and Jamie Campbell Bower, the first part of Stranger Things Season 4 is available now on Netflix, with the second part due to be released on July 1, 2022. A fifth season of Stranger Things has now been confirmed to be the series’ last, with the Duffer Brothers planning spinoffs to follow.
