The Duffer Brothers are already working on Stranger Things season 4. Netflix has yet to officially announce the follow up to the recently released season 3, but the show's creators are hard at work on what comes next and it could end up being a lot different from what we've seen previously. While the streaming platform has yet to officially announce the next season, it's only a matter of time before they do. There are SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 3 below, so read ahead at your own risk.

The world of Stranger Things has been turned upside down. Hopper is dead, Eleven has lost her powers, and the gang has pretty much split up now that Will and Eleven are gone. There's a Demogorgon in Russia with a mystery prisoner and fans are deeply curious to see where this is all leading. When asked about what comes next, Ross Duffer had this to say.

"We don't want to write ourselves in a corner so we try to have these early discussions with the writers just to make sure that we're setting ourselves up to go in the right direction. We don't know a lot, but we do know a lot of the big broad strokes. At the end of season two, we knew about Billy.

We knew that the Russians were going to come in. We didn't know the mall and stuff, but again, we know these big broad strokes. That's sort of where we are in season four. We have the big broad strokes. It's just now about filling in those lines in the details. We're pretty excited about where it's potentially going to go. Again, like we said, it's going to feel very different than this season. But I think that's the right thing to do and I think it'll be exciting."

Matt Duffer went on to say that he's hoping for some expansion when it comes to Stranger Things season 4. For the most part, we've been in Hawkins, Indiana with the group and haven't ventured too far outside of that bubble. Thankfully, season 3 has set up expansion in a pretty perfect way. Duffer explains.

"I think the biggest thing that's going to happen is it's going to open up a little bit, not necessarily in terms of scale, in terms of special effects, but open up in terms of allowing plotlines into areas outside of Hawkins."

As for who the American in the cell is at the end of Stranger Things season 3, that is very much a mystery. There have been rumors speculating it could be Hopper, but the Duffer Brothers certainly aren't saying anything when it comes down to specifics. With that being said, this is going to be the storyline in which the shows goes next. Ross Duffer had this to say about the jumping point for season 4.

"Assuming there's a season 4, obviously the question of who that American is in that cell and then also what they're doing with the Demogorgon, is a tease. That's obviously going to play a huge role in a potential season four."

Stranger Things season 3 debuted on Netflix last week and has been breaking viewing records for the streaming platform. The 3rd season was put up on the 4th of July holiday and a lot of fans binge watched the entire season in less than 24 hours. Season 4 could end up being even bigger and, from the sounds of things, more expansive, taking us out of the Hawkins bubble. The future is uncertain, but things are looking good for the future. The interview with the Duffer Brothers was originally conducted by Entertainment Weekly.
