Netflix dropped their trailer for the fourth season of Stranger Things this morning, bringing a lot of talking points, including the first look at horror icon Robert Englund in his role as Victor Creel. The three-minute-plus trailer returned fans of the sci-fi horror series to the town of Hawkins, the wilds of Russia and the terror of the Upside-Down and set the scene for the arrival of all-new monsters and challenges for Eleven, Hopper and the rest of the Stranger Things gang.

Among the new footage in the trailer is the first look at Victor Creel, a murderer who is locked away in a psychiatric ward and is played by Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund. In a blink and you miss it moment, the character features towards the end of the trailer, bearded, scarred and with his eyes seemingly sealed shut. While Englund himself has suggested that he only appears in one episode, he certainly seems to be ready to bring another memorable character to screens.

Robert Englund Stranger Things Victor Creel

While there are rumors of this series of Stranger Things involving time travel, there are several theories linking this to the house of Victor Creel. Englund’s character will be seen in younger form as well, in flashbacks that will undoubtedly give a gruesome look at the crimes that led to his notoriety, but is there more to Creel than is currently known? It seems that information is something that we will have to wait until next month to find out, so start speculating now.

Since the first season of Stranger Things, The Duffer Brothers appear to have had a clear vision of where the series was heading if they were given a chance to complete their vision and tell the whole story. Season 1 brought the Demogorgon, followed by the malevolent presence of the Mind Flayer in season 2, which in turn led to the manifestation of the creature in the real world in season 3. Now the trailer for the new episodes has given a hint that the Mind Flayer is not the final form of the threats from the Upside-Down, and there is something more evil behind it. Whether this evil is linked to Victor Creel is not yet known, but it is not likely that a character with such a horrible history is going to be a side thought in the overarching story.

What is known is that the new season will include episodes that are almost twice as long as other seasons, as the Duffer’s realized that they have a lot of stories to tell across this season and the final fifth season, and that naturally led to a much bigger season than even they anticipated.

Matt Duffer recently said: “We didn't know how big the season was going to get, and we didn't even realize until we were about halfway through, just in terms of how much story that we wanted to tell this season. Game of Thrones is one thing we've referenced, but also for us really what it's about is revelations, in that we really wanted to start giving the audience some answers."

Stranger Things 4 Part 1 will release on Netflix on May 27.
