Universal has assembled some star power for Strays, a new live-action-CGI hybrid comedy following talking dogs. Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, and Will Forte have picked up roles as the lead characters for the movie, which is geared towards adult audiences. Dan Perrault (American Vandal) penned the screenplay with Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) on board to direct.

Strays follows an abandoned dog who teams up with other strays to get revenge on his former owner. Ferrell voices the abandoned dog with Jamie Foxx voicing one of his canine pals who assists him with his plan. Forte will play the human owner. It's not yet clear what this plan for vengeance will entail, but with adult audiences in mind for the project, chances are it won't be pretty.

The project first began with Erik Feig of Picturestart leading the way, later bringing in director Josh Greenbaum and Louis Leterrier. They serve as producers as does Phil Lord and Chris Miller alongside Lord Miller president of film, Aditya Sood. Jessica Switch will executive produce with Julia Hammer co-producing for Picturestart. Nikki Baida will executive produce for Lord Miller.

Senior VP of production development Jeyun Munford and director of development Tony Ducret will oversee for Universal.

These days, Will Ferrell can be seen starring in the Apple TV+ miniseries The Shrink Next Door with Paul Rudd and Kathryn Hahn. He also recently wrapped work playing the Ghost of Christmas Present on the holiday comedy Spirited with Ryan Reynolds. Ferrell has also teased that there will be an emotional aspect to that movie as well.

"The whole point of the movie is that the ghosts of Dickens’ Christmas Carol, who pluck a Scrooge every year to show them the error of their ways and then they’re like, ‘I will be a better person’ — there’s a crisis of faith in that, like, what [the ghosts] do, does it even work anymore? That’s what we’re examining,” Ferrell explained, per THR. “So yes, it’s really fun and there are great songs, but I also had moments of, ‘Wait, I’m crying in this now, too?'”

Jamie Foxx has also been getting a lot of attention in the press lately, as he's been featured in the trailers for the anticipated feature Spider-Man: No Way Home. The movie brings him back as Electro, a supervillain who fought Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The movie will be released in theaters on Dec. 17. Foxx is also attached to a Mike Tyson biopic and he also appears in the upcoming sports drama All-Star Weekend, which he also directed and co-wrote.

As for Will Forte, he reprises one of his most iconic characters in a new MacGruber series for Peacock. The actor recently played Shaggy in Scoob! and voiced Abraham Lincoln in America: The Motion Picture. Forte also had major roles in the recent shows HouseBroken, Sweet Tooth, and The Great North.

Strays was shot and wrapped in the fall with post-production on the project now beginning, and that includes the process of bringing the talking dogs to life through the use of visual effects. A release date hasn't yet been announced for the movie. This news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
