Moviehole reports that a remake of the Paul Newman-starring ice hockey classic Slap Shot (1977) is headed for a remake.

Universal has tapped Stuart Blumberg (The Girl Next Door) to write the script for the film - the tale of a failing ice hockey team who finds success using constant fighting and violence during games.

Newman had the lead role as coach Reggie "Reg" Dunlop in the original and Moviehole thinks that the studio will retain the character... and ask a Matthew McConaughey or an Eddie Murphy type actor to step in.

There was a straight-to-video sequel a couple of years back, starring Stephen Baldwin.
