Showtime is going back to the 70s with its latest TV project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Showtime has acquired Studio from writer Chad Hodge. Bryan Singer is in early talks to direct the pilot episode.

The series will focus on real-life Studio 54 owner Steve Rubell and will be set in the months before the 1977 opening of the infamous New York City nightclub. While Rubell's character will be based on the real person, the rest of the show will feature fictional characters.

"The show is less about the history of Studio 54 than it is about New York in the late '70s, what people were going through, the political and social issues," Hodge said. "Studio 54 is the backdrop for exploring that."

No production schedule for the series has been announced.
