Critics be damned, Suicide Squad is a box office success story for Warner Bros. and their DC Films' division. Heading into its 13th day of release after two weekends at the top of the box office, the super villain adventure has soared past an important milestone, earning $509 million worldwide. The movie has helped bring the August box office to a record high, having opened on August 5 with the biggest debut the late summer month has ever seen.

Suicide Squad is currently the 11th biggest movie of 2016, but that should change as it heads into its third weekend of release this Friday. Come Monday, it should have successfully jumped up a few slots. Domestically, Suicide Squad has earned $238 million with an international cume of $217 million. The movie still hasn't opened in the German market yet, which happens this weekend. According to Deadline, that should enable the DC Comics thriller to hold onto its top slot at the international box office during its third overseas frame. Says WB President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution Sue Kroll.

"The film is in position for another terrific weekend as our overseas expansion continues."

If Suicide Squad squeaks past the remake Ben-Hur this weekend, it will be the fifth movie of the year to hold down the top slot three weeks in a row following Deadpool, Zootopia, The Jungle Book and Finding Dory. Task Force X has reigned supreme in the U.K. with strong showings in other major markets such as Brazil, Russia, Mexico and Australia. The DC movie was only down 55.7% in ticket sales this past weekend, besting Batman v Superman's 66% drop in its second weekend back in March.

Though the movie boasts a stellar ensemble cast, Will Smith is clearly seen as the lead. The movie has proved to be a career highlight for the actor in a number of key offshore markets. These include Argentina, Italy, the UK, Russia and Brazil. WB President of Worldwide Distribution Veronika Kwan Vandenberg had this to say.

"It is incredibly rewarding to see audiences around the world coming out in such a big way for Suicide Squad. We have several major markets yet to open, and expect to continue seeing strong returns at the box office for the weeks to come."

Japan is expected to be a key market for Suicide Squad, but it doesn't open in that country until September 10. The movie is not currently scheduled to open in the all-important Chinese market at all. This latest chapter in the DCEU could stay atop the box office charts heading well into September here in the states. It's too early to predict how much the movie will pull in by the time it ends its full theatrical run.
