“I am not a monster,” Uber CEO Travis Kalanick claims in the new Showtime trailer for Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber, the first season of a new anthology series about the business deals that changed the world and our lives forever. This first season stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Uber’s CEO. Here is our first look at this series with the official trailer below.

The trailer shows Kalanick, a visionary with a lot of ambition who’s willing to do whatever it takes to build his company. Doing whatever it takes means getting involved with some of the more prominent players in the financial market, such as The Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington (Uma Thurman.) Huffington also would become the first female to join the famous app's Board of Directors. The trailer gives us an inside look into how Kalanick went about getting funded and how he found Bill Gurley, who was the primary key to getting the funding he needed to start Uber.

Is the New Series Fact or Fiction?

The new series will also take a deep look into the struggles that almost destroyed the company. As the trailer shows, Uber’s fast-growing success also inflated Kalanick’s ego to a point where he didn’t care about how he carried himself and how others felt around him. We also see that Kalanick felt he was in danger of being kicked out of the company he helped create, which only escalated his behavior. At one point, we hear him say, “We are disrupters. We are kings, gods.” But when things start to fall apart and a colleague tells him, “I’m going to side with the company,” he yells, “I AM the company.”

In another scene, he threatens, “Disloyalty needs to be punished.” This series is not afraid to go into the darker side of these companies and open the doors to give us a more detailed look at how things transpired. Uber is currently the most valuable U.S. startup at $68 billion. In June 2017, Kalanick was asked to step down from his position as CEO and was replaced by Dara Khosrowshahi, former CEO of Expedia, who remains CEO today.

Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber is based on the best-selling book of the same name by author Mike Isaac released in 2019.
