Supergirl season 4 is tackling the Superman: Red Son comic book storyline. The Season 3 finale just aired on The CW and, as with most season finales for the network's DC shows, it came with some big action and some big reveals. While the episode did put a button on much of what has been going on in the series this season, it also set the stage for a major storyline next season, which has been confirmed by showrunners Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller.

Warning: spoilers ahead for the Supergirl season 3 finale. In the final minutes of the episode, Kara Zor-El finally defeated Reign, which more or less concluded the season's story arc. The scene then shifts to Russia where we see someone who rather closely resembles our hero walking through the snow in nothing but a cloak. The figure is discovered by Russian soldiers and we're then left with a pretty big cliffhanger. In an interview. Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller discussed the ending and revealed that they are indeed going to tackle the Red Son storyline next season. Here's what Rovner had to say about it.

"For fans of the comics, I think they might recognize that the story we want to tell is inspired by the iconic DC Comics' Red Son, which told an alternate origin story for Superman."

Queeler added, "What happened if, as a baby, Superman landed in Russia and became a hero there instead of in America. It's an homage to that." Beyond that, the duo didn't dish anything further on next season's plans, but that's more than enough to pique the interest of many DC fans out there. Obviously, this is going to be taking some serious liberties with the source material, as the original story, which was published by DC in 2003 and was written by Mark Millar (Kingsman, Kick-Ass), centered on the Man of Steel and not the Last Daughter of Krypton. But still, it's a very interesting story to adapt nonetheless.

For those who may not be familiar with the Superman: Red Son storyline, the book imagines what would happen if Kal-El's pod had crashed in the Soviet Union instead of Kansas. What if Superman were raised in that kind of environment as opposed to by loving parents in the American countryside? The book takes place outside of the main DC Comics continuity and is what is known as an Elseworlds tale. Other popular examples of this include Batman: Gotham by Gaslight and Kingdom Come.

This isn't the first we've heard of an adaptation of this particular story. Previously, Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts had pitched doing Red Son as a movie to Warner Bros., but clearly the idea never really took off. So, instead, we're going to get what could be a pretty interesting take on the material on the small screen. Supergirl season 4 doesn't yet have a premiere date locked in, but the show will be airing Sundays this fall on The CW. This news comes to us courtesy of TV Line.
