Christopher McQuarrie is no stranger to taking franchises and elevating them. The director was at one time attached to helm and write both Man of Steel 2 and the Green Lantern Corps projects, but they never came to be, despite the immense excitement from DC fans. McQuarrie had previously confirmed he and Mission: Impossible - Fallout star Henry Cavill were discussing ideas for the follow up to 2013's Man of Steel, but those ideas did not come into fruition. So what happened to McQuarrie's Man of Steel 2 and Green Lantern Corps plans?
Christopher McQuarrie confirmed he and Henry Cavill pitched their idea for Man of Steel 2 to Warner Bros. He also revealed he was asked by the studio to come up with a written proposal for the Green Lantern Corps. project. The director was responding to a fan's question on social media to help get some clarification about his involvement with DC. What should come as missed opportunity at best, McQuarrie says he wanted both movies to be connected to each other. He had this to say about why neither project took hold.
"Too complicated to explain. It (Green Lantern Corps) tied into the Superman movie that Cavill and I were proposing. No takers. The studios have never cared for my original ideas. They prefer that I fix their broken ones."
This bit of news from Christopher McQuarrie seems to go against the previous rumors about his relationship with Warner Bros. When the Man of Steel 2 and Green Lantern Corps reports first made the rounds and ended with nothing, rumors began to spread about the director shying away from the DCEU aspect. However, it seems he was fully embracing the idea of a shared universe, especially when confirming that both projects would have been connected to each other.
Additionally, it looks like Henry Cavill really tried his best to get Man of Steel 2 off of the ground. DC fans have been waiting a very long time for any news regarding the sequel, but it seems like it is truly dead at this point in time with Cavill's contract expiring. Christopher McQuarrie and Cavill could have potentially made a pretty epic follow up to Man of Steel and fans are probably going to be bummed to know that their proposal was denied by the studio.
Henry Cavill has also expressed his disappointment about Man of Steel 2. As for Green Lantern Corps, that idea is still being floated around, but without Christopher McQuarrie's involvement. For now, Warner Bros. is looking to branch out with their DC properties. The Suicide Squad, Joker, and Birds of Prey are all on the way, each one making some new decisions and breaking some ground.
