Is Superman finally getting a new show on the small screen? According to a new report, that may very well be the case. We must caution, as always with things of this nature, that for the time being, this should be regarded as nothing more than a rumor, as it hasn't been confirmed by the studio or anyone associated with the production. That said, it sounds like The CW may finally be committing to the Man of Steel in a meaningful way.

According to a new report, this year's upcoming Arrowverse crossover event Elseworlds will not only be a launching pad for Ruby Rose's Batwoman series, but that the network will be using it as something of a back door for a new Superman series. Tyler Hoechlin, who has appeared several times in the Arrowverse as the iconic DC hero, is already confirmed to be appearing in the crossover (and will be wearing Superman's black suit for part of it). That does, to some degree, lend at least a bit of credibility to this rumor.

On the surface, this makes a great deal of sense. Superman is one of the biggest superheroes around and there is already an actor people like in the role playing him on the small screen. Tyler Hoechlin is assuredly on board with the idea and The CW has been killing it with characters far less recognizable to a wider audience. Imagine how well they could do with this. Especially considering that they've proved they know how to handle the DC brand very well over the last handful of years. But there are several things that could get in the way of this actually happening, even if the desire is there.

For starters, Warner Bros. doesn't like to have the different actors playing the same characters on the big screen and small screen whenever it can be avoided. This is why The Joker on Gotham can't actually be called The Joker, for example. It's also probably why we haven't seen Batman show up in the Arrowverse, and why Batwoman is getting her own show. Henry Cavill has been playing the character in the big screen DC universe, but recently, reports have circulated saying that he could be hanging up the cape. While there has been some doubt cast on that front, Warner Bros. appears to have no plans for a new Superman movie anytime soon. That could open the door for a new series.

The other problem is in terms of what The CW can actually handle. They already have Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning, with Batwoman on the way. Superman would make for a very crowded DC slate. But this could also be a future play. Stephen Amell isn't going to play Oliver Queen forever and Arrow just kicked off its seventh season. Maybe Superman could replace one of these shows once it wraps up?

It's also worth mentioning that The CW previously had a lot of success with the Clark Kent-centric series Smallville. In any case, we may be seeing a whole lot more of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman in the future, if this rumor has any truth to it. The three-night Elseworlds crossover event is set to kick off on Sunday, December 9. This news was first reported by FandomWire
