Next year, Sony Pictures Animation will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of its animated hit Surf's Up. What better way to kick off the celebration than with the release of a brand new sequel, Surf's Up 2: WaveMania. Earlier today, Sony and WWE Studios debuted the brand new trailer for this animated sequel, offering our first look at The Hang 5.

Cody Maverick, hungry for a new challenge, convinces an infamous big wave riding crew known as The Hang 5, voiced by WWE Superstars John Cena, The Undertaker, Triple H, WWE Diva Paige and Mr. McMahon, to let him join them on their journey to a mysterious surf spot known as The Trenches, where legend has it, they'll find the biggest waves in the world. Cody soon discovers that the life he left behind might be more heroic than what any death-defying wave has to offer. Surf's Up 2: WaveMania will be released by Sony Pictures Animation and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in early 2017.

Genndy Tartakovsky's protégé Henry Yu (story artist on Sym-Bionic Titan and both Hotel Transylvania feature films) makes his directorial debut with this project, which is produced by Michelle Wong (production manager on Hotel Transylvania 2) and features computer animation from Rainmaker Entertainment Inc. Abdul Williams (Lottery Ticket) is writing the screenplay. Surf's Up 2: WaveMania will be distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment with WWE Studios providing marketing support by leveraging its extensive multi-platform reach.

The original Surf's Up featured an all-star voice cast lead by Shia LaBeouf, Jeff Bridges, Zooey Deschanel, Jon Heder, James Woods, Diedrich Bader, Mario Cantone and real-life surfing legend Kelly Slater. Aside from these new characters voiced by WWE Superstars, no other voice cast members have been announced, so we're not sure if any of the original Surf's Up stars will reprise their roles. Surf's Up, which was directed by George Miller, took in $58.8 million domestically and $149 million worldwide during its theatrical run back in 2007.

Sony Pictures and WWE Studios are also teaming up for The Marine 5: Battleground, starring WWE Superstar The Miz. We'll be sure to keep you posted with more details on Surf's Up: Wavemania, The Marine 5 and more projects from Sony and WWE. In the meantime, take a look at the first trailer for Surf's Up: Wavemania below, along with photos with these WWE Superstars and their characters below.
