As we all know by this point in time, Warner Bros. recently put the kibosh on their stellar Swamp Thing TV series over on DC Universe after only airing a single episode. There has been tons of confusion about why the show got such a swift bullet to the head, but today we have word that there may be a light at the end of the tunnel for Alec Holland and his swamp-dwelling buddies. Today we're hearing that Warner Bros. is planning to bring the mean green guy back to the big screen in a Swamp Thing horror movie with a similar sort of vibe to the series.
This news comes on the heels of a rumor that was circling a few weeks back that said that the powers that be behind the scenes at Warner Bros. were looking to cast Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Killing of a Sacred Deer actor Colin Farrell as John Constantine in an all-new movie. Could Warner Brothers actually be planning to one day combine these two characters and finally bring us the Justice League Dark movie that we have all be praying for?
God, let's hope so. But until we know more about Colin Farrell's new Constantine movie and/or this Swamp Thing motion picture maybe its best to not get our hopes up (yet again) for a Justice League Dark movie.
That said, this Swamp Thing movie seems to be a sure-bet from what we hear. In fact, it looks like all the backlash that came about after the cancellation of the Swamp Thing series over on DC Universe - and the positive word of mouth the show is gathering all the same - has more than inspired the studio to move ahead on Swamp Thing the movie. However, fans of the series might be upset to hear that the powers that be behind the scenes are planning to reboot the character from the ground up with a whole new cast and crew. Weak. Whatever ends up happening with this new Swamp Thing movie or the Colin Farrell Constantine flick, I think DC is moving in the right direction. After all, they are already confirmed to be producing a Aquaman horror movie spin-off with James Wan based on the killer fish creatures The Trench from Wan's recent mega-blockbuster.
Meanwhile, DC Universe is planning to release the remaining episodes of their now dead in the water Swamp Thing series throughout the next few weeks. That series - which is as good as everyone is saying it is - comes to us from Gary Dauberman and Mark Verheiden based on the character created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. The show stars Crystal Reed as Abigail "Abby" Arcane, Virginia Madsen as Maria Sunderland, Henderson Wade as Matt Cable, Maria Sten as Liz Tremayne, Jeryl Prescott as Nimue / Xanadu, Jennifer Beals as Lucilia Cable, Will Patton as Avery Sunderland, and Kevin Durand as Jason Woodrue with Andy Bean as Alec Holland, and Derek Mears as Swamp Thing.
