Veteran actor Sylvester Stallone has appeared in dozens of movies over the years with some performing better than others. While he has appeared in some of the most iconic films of all time, Stallone has also headlined others that didn't do quite so well. That includes his role in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, a film he later learned that he was tricked into accepting by former rival Arnold Schwarzenegger.
However, one particular box office bomb that Stallone remains proud of is the 2000 remake of Get Carter. Directed by Stephen Kay, the action movie was a remake of the 1971 movie which starred Michael Caine as English gangster Jack Carter. The remake reimagined Jack Carter as a Vegas mobster with Stallone in the role, though Caine was also featured as a supporting character. Miranda Richardson, Rachael Leigh Cook, Alan Cumming, and Mickey Rourke also starred.
With a budget of more than $60 million, Get Carter flopped hard at the box office with a worldwide haul of less than $20 million. Critics were also left unimpressed, giving Get Carter a critical score of 11% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes. Worse yet for Stallone, his role in the film also had him nominated for Worst Actor at the Razzies in 2000 while the film was also up for Worst Remake or Sequel. On paper, the film's failures would mark one of the biggest blemishes of Stallone's career.
Sly Stallone Says Fans Were Too Nostalgic for the Original Get Carter
The filmgoers that bothered to go weren't happy with Get Carter, but for Stallone, he feels that the movie deserves more appreciation. In a recent interview with THR, Stallone was directly asked if he could name his "most underrated film." There are many titles to choose from when looking back at his career, but Stallone was quick to name Get Carter as the one he feels is more underrated than any others. A runner-up would be Cop Land, a 1997 film starring Stallone as a sheriff taking on a corrupt police department; that film was a financial success, though he imagined it being a much bigger hit.
"Believe it or not, I think Get Carter was really underrated. That was a big disappointment. I learned the hard way that [remakes], even if you do it better than the original, there’s a tremendous nostalgia attached to the original. And quite often they’re not done as well. Like the last West Side Story. Why would you mess with something like that? Not only because [of the original’s quality] but because people’s tastes change. Musicals don’t make it anymore. Kids cannot relate to that kind of music. So who’s your audience? It’s crazy. Also, I thought Cop Land was going to do a little better."
On the other side of the spectrum, Stallone has also said that Rocky Balboa is what he considers to be his very best movie. Of course, fans will have their own opinions, as there are many other films in the actor's career that are very popular.
