Taika Waititi is one of MCU’s most lovable directors. You can be a fan of him as easily as you can be a fan of his films. Unfortunately, Waititi’s last movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, wasn’t the huge success many of us hoped it would be. But that’s likely only because the filmmaker has so much on his plate. At the moment, Waititi is listed as a writer for seven upcoming films and TV shows, with four more projects currently being developed. That’s eleven projects he’s working on in the wake of Love and Thunder, and none of them are small projects. On his list are giant fan favorites that no one could think to ignore, but there are also some very artistic projects that reflect the work of some particularly unique artists.

Waititi will have to pull out all the stops to work with such a packed schedule, but many of the films on his list are right inside his wheelhouse. The filmmaker performs best on movies that feel small and intimate and usually have some sort of cultural relevance. Of course, we’ve seen him do astounding things with huge comic book projects as well. This time he’s been given films close to everyone’s hearts. Star Wars fans, '80s fans, long-term Taika Waititi fans, surrealist fans, and even Monty Python fans will all be excited when they see this next round of films that Waititi is working on.

Taika Waititi's Projects

Waititi has a lot going on right now, and naturally, some projects take priority over others. For example, Disney contracted Taika Waititi to make a Star Wars film, and while he’s listed as the director, the release date is set sometime in 2025. So he probably won’t even touch the film until he’s finished with a few other things. Aside from the Untitled Star Wars Project, another thing he has on his list (and has recently completed) is the screenplay for Next Goal Wins, a parody of a 2014 British documentary about the American Samoa soccer team who suffered the worst defeat in world cup history when the Australian team beat them 31-0 in 2001. It has all the pieces to be charming, sad, and funny -- right up Waititi’s alley.

He’s also working on two adaptations from very popular and amazing artists. One, Time Bandits, was a 1981 film by Terry Gilliam and the rest of the Monty Python crew and is now in the hands of Waititi to be turned into a TV series. The filmmaker is also working on a project called The Incal, which will adapt a graphic novel created by famed surrealist Alejandro Jodorowsky and extremely talented sci-fi illustrator Moebius. Though the project is still in its infancy, fans of the graphic novel will know that Waititi has stumbled on a golden egg begging to be hatched.

He’s also working with Jemaine Clement on a sequel to What We Do in the Shadows called We’re Wolves. It’s expected that Rhys Darby will also join the project. Flash Gordon is another title that '80s babies will undoubtedly recognize and will know is ripe for parody being brought into this day and age. Finally, the legendary anime film Akira was put into Waititi’s hands. Though no movement has been made on the movie yet, it will be a live-action film and hopefully will stay in the waiting room until the filmmaker has enough time to give it the attention it needs.

The Dangers of Development Hell

Often when a popular director or writer is given too many projects, some end up getting lost by the wayside simply because of how much work that person has to do. In Taika Waititi’s case, he has so many popular titles on his plate that some may get lost in the shuffle. His series Time Bandits has a pilot at the moment, which means it should be among the first of the unfinished projects to garner Waititi’s energy. The Incal is listed as being in pre-production, so it will probably take priority soon after.

As for the other works, Disney is a big enough studio to have films planned until the world ends and will eventually demand Waititi’s attention if enough time passes. So unless something drastic happens with either the Star Wars franchise or the filmmaker, it’s likely that film will eventually get made. We’re Wolves will probably get made as well since it’s a project close to Waititi’s heart, and he works great with fellow filmmaker Jemaine Clement, who will be there to put energy into the project.

The two films in the most danger of being lost are Flash Gordon and Akira. While both would be good to see Waititi’s talents, they will be big mountains to climb. If they were to be made at all, they would have to wait at least a year for Waititi even to start writing a screenplay. Production on either of them would probably run into schedules of his TV series that got picked up for second seasons, and the looming giant of Star Wars would take precedence over them if they weren’t started by 2024.

Right now, all we can do is cross our fingers and hope Waititi can make things work. If he doesn’t, we’re still sure to get some quality entertainment from the master filmmaker, but Flash Gordon and Akira might not be strong bets at the moment.
