While The Walking Dead fans are starting to lose hope of ever seeing the fabled Rick Grimes movie spin-off, the latest spin-off series, Tales of The Walking Dead, will begin shooting next week in Georgia. Following in the footsteps of Fear the Walking Dead and the recently ended Walking Dead: World Beyond, Tales of The Walking Dead will further expand the television universe and has already been hinted as a brand new type of series, which will not follow the format of its predecessors and fans can expect a different viewing experience from the show.

There is not a great deal of information currently known about the Tales of The Walking Dead spin-off series, which was announced early last year, but it has been suggested that the series will be an experimental project that will be used to try out different formats such as animation as a way of telling new stories of unseen areas of The Walking Dead universe. With other spin-offs already in consideration linked to the flagship series, such as a Carol and Daryl-centric show, this will be one of the only “one-shot” style projects to have been brought TV in the zombie-filled world.

The Gainesville Times posted information about the filming of the new show, noting that for a $30,000 donation Hall County was allowing the use of a property at 5711 Holiday Road in Buford, which will see the undead invading on January 18th. A parking lot at the location features a fake Mini Mart building, and a Mexican eatery called “2 Panchos,” which seems to suggest that the filming been done here will be focussed on a specific single location and characters. According to the report, filming will commence next week and last around 53 days. Following filming the buildings will be dismantled and the site will make way for a new Hall County Fire Station.

Tales of The Walking Dead Will Bring Something New To The Long-Running Franchise

The series will see The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead producer and writer Channing Powell act as showrunner, and previously said of the new project, "I started as a fan of The Walking Dead and have ended up as a showrunner of what will hopefully be one of its most unique spin-offs. That's nuts and I'm so grateful to AMC and Scott [Gimple] for supporting me and my writers while we pushed, pulled and poked at the boundaries of this universe to bring you something new and unexpected, while hopefully still tending to what core audiences loved so much about the flagship show."

Tales of The Walking Dead seems to be making sure it brings something less coherent and set to the universe, with single stories, told in unique and experimental ways. While many fans abandoned The Walking Dead a few years ago, those who have stuck with it and will continue to do so until the end will certainly appreciate the change in pace and format rather than just another long-form story that plods along, treading the same old plot lines. The series is expected to make its debut on AMC later this year.
