The Good

4 very good films are given to us on DVD.

The Bad

Crummy extras.TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Romance features 4 films that helped define the genre over time. They are:

- Splendor in the Grass

- Love in the Afternoon

- Mogambo

- Now, Voyager

Splendor in the Grass features Warren Beatty and Natalie Wood in a screen romance to end all screen romances. Love in the Afternoon pits Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper as opposites who attract in this exciting romp.

Mogambo, directed by the legendary John Ford, sees Clark Gable dealing with his love for two women Ava Gardner and Grace Kelly. Zowee mama! Lastly, Now, Voyager showcases Bette Davis as a spinster who changes her life.

Features

I am sorry but "Classic Cartoons," "Theatrical Trailers" and "Cast and Crew Highlights" don't really pass muster as Bonus Features. Not in this age of Blu-ray D's and supplemental features on discs that are out of this world!

Video

Splendor in the Grass and Love in the Afternoon idescreen format. This preserves the aspect ratio of their original theatrical exhibition. Enhanced for widescreen TVs. Splendor in the Grass is in color while Love in the Afternoon is in black and white. Mogambo and Now, Voyager are in the standard version presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of their original theatrical exhibition. Mogambo is in color while Now, Voyager is in black and white. While I didn't have time to view all the films I thought that Splendor in the Grass looked magnificent.

Audio

All of the films are in Dolby Digital except for Mogambo and Now, Voyager. These films are in English and French mono. I found that Splendor in the Grass sounded quite good on DVD. I didn't hear any points where the audio dropped out or wasn't crystal clear. I listened to the audio on a few of the other films and everything sounded pretty solid. It seems that across the two discs in this set everything was leveled quite uniformly.

Package

The stars of all four films in this set are majestically showcased on the front of this amaray case. The back features movie listings, "Bonus Feature" lists, technical specs, and cast lists. On the vinyl overlay that accompanies this release there is a description for each film.

Final Word

Call me a sap but as a big fan of The Notebook I loved the TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Romance. This collection not only features work by the great John Ford, but Splendor in the Grass has had a special place in my heart since I saw the play multiple times in high school.
