The highly anticipated third season of Ted Lasso has recently premiered on Apple TV+, and fans are eager to see if former assistant coach Nathan Shelly will find redemption. The character, played by Nick Mohammed, underwent a significant transformation over the course of the first two seasons, going from a shy and overlooked kitman to a confident and respected coach. However, his newfound success and confidence led him down a darker path, and he ultimately betrayed the team by leaving for a coaching position at rival team West Ham United FC.

According to actor Nick Mohammed, the character is far from happy. Speaking to Deadline, Mohammed revealed that Nate is a "troubled soul" who is always worried about something. Despite being positive about the perks that come with working at West Ham, such as a fancy new car and a bigger salary, Nate is realizing that they will not bring him true happiness. Mohammed also stated that Nate still carries regret, guilt, and shame with the way he left AFC Richmond and how he treated Ted.

"I don't think Nate is happy now. Sadly Nate, bless him, he's a troubled soul. I rarely think he's ever 100 percent happy and he's always worried about something. Undoubtedly, he's made this decision to be at West Ham, this fancy club that comes with perks. In the moment, he's positive about those things like driving his fancy new car and having a bigger salary but I think he's realizing they won't make him truly happy. He still carries the regret, guilt, and shame with the way he left AFC Richmond and the way he talks to Ted. I think that's going to eat at him until he's able to find some kind of catharsis or he addresses Ted directly."

Nick Mohammed also addressed whether Nate will have a redemption arc in the upcoming season, stating that it's ultimately up to the audience and their capacity for forgiveness. He noted that some fans may find it difficult to forgive Nate for his actions in season two, where he betrayed his team and left for a rival club. While there may be a possibility for Nate to apologize and seek forgiveness, Mohammed suggested that it's not so clear-cut and that there's a blurred line when it comes to redemption.

"There's a lot of anticipation as to whether Nate is getting this redemption arc and all I'll say is that it's not up to me or even the writers. I think it's more about the audience and their capacity for forgiveness," Nick said. "To some people. Nate's betrayal at the end of Season 2 was the straw that broke the camel's back and there's no going back because he can't re-write history. He did and said those things. Let's say for the sake of argument he apologizes, get's on his knees and begs for forgiveness. He still did it. There is an element of whether the onus is on the person to forgive Nate rather than for Nate's forgiveness to be absolute. Like everything with Ted Lasso, it's not so clear cut in that way, it's more nuanced. It's not that he is definitely redeemed or not, there's a blurred line there."

The series features an ensemble cast that includes Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, Juno Temple, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, and Toheeb Jimoh. Ted Lasso season three premiered on March 15 on Apple TV+.
