Elle Fanning sings a cover version of Robyn's "Dancing on My Own" in the first trailer for Teen Spirit. The musical drama premiered earlier this year at the Toronto International Film Festival and starts its theatrical run in April of next year. The trailer doesn't include too much dialogue, instead it puts the focus on Fanning's Violet character as she goes through the ups and downs of the music business. Everything is laid out in a short and succinct way, which leads one to believe that the movie won't have too much dialogue either.

Violet (Elle Fanning) is a shy teenager who dreams of escaping her small town and pursuing her passion to sing. With the help of an unlikely mentor, she enters a local singing competition that will test her integrity, talent and ambition. Driven by a pop-fueled soundtrack, Teen Spirit is a visceral and stylish spin on the Cinderella story. Fanning is known for her acting chops, but it looks like Teen Spirit is going to bring her singing to the forefront.

Elle Fanning will be singing songs from Robyn, Tegan and Sara, Ellie Goulding, Annie Lennox, Orbital, Sigrid, Carly Rae Jespen, and Jack Antonoff. Additionally, Teen Spirit includes music by No Doubt, Katy Perry, Grimes, Ariana Grande, The Undertones, Aqua, Alice Deejay, Whigfield, and Major Lazer. Sadly, or not depending on your outlook, it doesn't look like a cover of Nirvana's breakout hit song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" will be used in the movie. There doesn't look like there's a whole lot of hard rock included in the soundtrack.

Max Minghella wrote the screenplay for Teen Spirit and made his directorial debut with the project. In early 2017, it was revealed that Elle Fanning had signed on board to star, with production starting in July of 2017. In addition to hearing some of the music from the aforementioned artists, Teen Spirit will feature some performances, though it isn't clear who appears in the movie at this time. Fanning was last seen singing in the 2017 movie How to Talk to Girls at Parties, which was adapted from the Neil Gaiman book of the same name.

Teen Spirit is set to hit theaters on April 5th, 2019. It looks like the soundtrack will help to put some viewers into the movie theaters, but the main focus is going to be Elle Fanning and her voice as she covers some pretty big songs, and some that were written specifically for the movie. As the trailer indicates, Fanning definitely has the vocal chops to hang with some real pop stars, which means that the movie has the potential to become a pretty big hit. For now, we'll just have to wait and see. You can check out the first trailer for Teen Spirit below, provided by the Bleecker Street YouTube channel.
