The reviews for The Adam Project, one of Netflix’s many highly anticipated movies due for release this year, are now in. So, is the Ryan Reynolds-led family time-travel adventure worth sitting down for? Or is The Adam Project due to get left behind by the streaming giant’s merciless algorithm?

Well, according to Gaius Bolling of JoBlo, The Adam Project is very much the former, with the critic finding a lot to love about Ryan Reynolds and newcomer Walker Scobell’s Netflix outing, ultimately giving the movie a truly exiting 9/10.

“Maybe quite surprisingly, The Adam Project turns out to be a contender for the best crowdpleaser of 2022. The film is funny and deeply touching as it reminds us of all the things we loved about these kinds of films growing up. It’s a definite win for Netflix originals, which don’t always necessarily land, and it gives us one of the best Ryan Reynolds performances to date. With shades of Back to The Future and Flight of the Navigator, The Adam Project truly is a total wonder to behold.”

The praise for The Adam Project continues with IGN’s Ryan Leston, who also gifted the movie an impressive 9/10 and commended the nostalgic feeling crafted by director Shawn Levy, comparing The Adam Project to such childhood classics as Back to the Future and The Last Starfighter.

“The Adam Project is a thoughtful, witty mash-up of all the movies from my childhood. It’s Back to the Future meets The Last Starfighter with a slew of wonderful performances from a cast that clearly loves the concept as much as I do. Ryan Reynolds is on top form as Adam, while Walker Scobell matches him punch for punch with a great debut performance. The Adam Project is a love letter to the family sci-fi flicks of the ‘70s and ‘80s, packed full of Amblin-like charm.”

Things get a little more middling with Jordan King of Empire who, while finding lots to enjoy in The Adam Project, found some elements disappointingly uninspiring.

“Though a forgettable villain and some uninspiring set-pieces sometimes hinder The Adam Project, Reynolds and Scobell’s cracking performances and the film’s surprising emotional depth make it worth a look.”

Unfortunately, not everyone was enamored by The Adam Project. Owen Gleiberman from Variety describes The Adam Project as “the definition of trivial" adding, “Here’s my own leap into the future: As a team, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy are going to make much better movies than this one, but you can feel the tastiness of their combo even in a kinetic marshmallow like “The Adam Project.” They’re not trying to fake fun.” David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter meanwhile criticized The Adam Project for its reliance on other movies before adding that the Netflix outing “has a protagonist so smugly self-aware that none of his feelings ring true — isn’t really engineered for emotional investment. And everything else is too pedestrian to generate excitement.”

The Adam Project Gives Off a "Spielbergian" Vibe

Thankfully, things do take a turn towards the positive again, courtesy of Ben F. Silverio of SlashFilm, who gave The Adam Project 8/10. In large part thanks to the “the Spielbergian vibes.”

“Whether you decide to watch it with your biological family, your found family, with your animal babies, or by yourself, "The Adam Project" is absolutely worth your time — there's definitely something here for everybody. And in an age where nostalgia can be shoved down your throat, let all those good nostalgic feelings wash over you and enjoy the Spielbergian vibes from a simpler time.”

After accidentally crash-landing in 2022, time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self for a mission to save the future. Directed by Shawn Levy, and starring Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Walker Scobell, Catherine Keener, and Zoe Saldaña, The Adam Project is scheduled to be released on Netflix on March 11, 2022.
