According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM's The Amityville Horror closed boxoffice escrow in the top spot this weekend with an estimated $23.3 million from the swan song wide release of the legendary studio. In a bittersweet victory and the last roar of the MGM lion -- the company was recently acquired by Sony and a consortium of investors -- the distributor will go out on a high note as the horror film landed at the high end of expectations this weekend.

The remake of the 1979 original Amityville Horror stars Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George as the hapless couple who move into the quaint charmer, with first-time feature film director Andrew Douglas at the helm.
