An update regarding the in-development DC sequel, The Batman 2, has revealed that, unfortunately, we may be waiting a while before sitting down to once again bask in the grim and gritty Gotham city created by director Matt Reeves. Coming courtesy of a report by Variety, which largely details the appointment of James Gunn and Peter as co-CEO's of DC Studios, it seems that The Batman 2 will not be landing in theaters until at least 2025.

“Also on deck are a sequel to “The Batman,” but writer and director Matt Reeves has yet to deliver a finished script, so that movie will not hit theaters until 2025 at the earliest.”

Released in March this year, The Batman finds the comic book icon venturing into Gotham City's underworld when a sadistic killer leaves behind a trail of cryptic clues. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans becomes clear, he must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued the metropolis.

Directed by Matt Reeves, who wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne aka The Batman, alongside Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton aka Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Colin Farrell as Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot aka Penguin, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.

The Batman was met with rave reviews from critics, with many looking forward to continuing the adventures of this latest reboot of The Dark Knight. Sadly, we’re all going to be waiting a while.

There had been some concern over The Batman 2 amid the chaos that has recently befallen Warner Bros. Pictures. Thankfully all of those concerns were for nothing, as Matt Reeves is now writing the sequel alongside Mattson Tomlin. It has also been confirmed that Robert Pattinson will reprise the role of The Batman.

A sequel to The Batman is just one of the many pieces being put together for Matt Reeves’ Batman shared universe. The filmmaker has now signed a deal with the studio, and will head up a shared universe of his vision for the world of The Caped Crusader. “Someone like Matt, we’ll buy for him whatever he wants to do,” CEO of Warner Bros. Pictures Group Michael De Luca said in a statement. “We’re making an investment for whatever Matt feels a pull toward, in the Batman universe and otherwise. He has an open invitation to go wherever his interests take him. We’ll lean into whatever Matt wants to do. In terms of the writer/directors out there working in this very elevated genre space, with everything Matt’s done, from Let Me In to the Apes trilogy to The Batman, he’s in a class by himself.”

So far, that shared universe includes a series centered on The Penguin and a series set in Arkham Asylum, with The Batman 2 set to continue the journey of Bruce Wayne on the big screen. Here's hoping we can all find the necessary patience.
