Another cast member has signed on for The Batman, and this one brings with it the possibility for some major speculation. It's been revealed up-and-comer Jayme Lawson has been cast in a mystery role in the upcoming DC Comics adaptation. Lawson will star alongside Robert Pattinson (Twilight, The Lighthouse), who is set to play the Caped Crusader. Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield) is set to direct and co-write the screenplay. Now, another piece of the puzzle has slid into place as filming draws ever nearer.

According to a new report, Jayme Lawson las landed what is described as a "notable role" in The Batman. No further details were provided at this time. The interesting hook here is that this represents a huge break for Lawson, who recently graduated from the prestigious Juilliard. Lawson is so new to Hollywood that she doesn't even have an IMDB page. So we can't point to any of her on-screen work to demonstrate what she's capable of as a performer, but Warner Bros. and Matt Reeves must have seen something in her, given the high-profile nature of this project. There is certainly no shortage of talent interested in the movie, as has been made apparent with the previously revealed casting.

Aside from Robert Pattinson, who beat out Nicholas Hoult (Dark Phoenix, Mad Max: Fury Road) to become our new Bruce Wayne, the rest of the cast has filled out quite nicely. Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine) is set to play the Riddler, Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) is on board as Catwoman and Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, Casino Royale) has been tapped to play Commissioner Gordon. It was also recently revealed that Andy Serkis (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Black Panther) is in talks to play Alfred Pennyworth, with Colin Ferrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Seven Psychopaths) in talks to play Penguin.

Perhaps most important when it comes to speculating about Jayme Lawson's potential role is that of Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. As DC Comics fans may well know, Jim Gordon's daughter, Barbara Gordon, goes on to become Batgirl. We know Warner Bros. has a Batgirl movie in development. So, is it possible that Lawson will be playing Barbara Gordon, planting the seeds for her to eventually put on a superhero suit herself? That's purely speculative, but not totally out of the question. Though, all signs point to, or at least pointed to, Batgirl being set in the DCEU alongside movies like Aquaman and Justice League. The Batman won't be set in universe.

In any case, after years of development, this movie is finally moving in the right direction. Production on The Batman is expected to begin early next year and we'll be sure to keep you posted as any further details on the project are made available. The Batman is set to hit theaters on June 25, 2021. This news comes to us via Collider.
