Matt Reeves' The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne is all set to punch its way into a theater near you in June 2021. And now with the casting of The Dark Knight done and done, it's time for the internet to begin speculating on who will play some of the other critical roles from the Caped Crusader's history. And why not start with Alfred Pennyworth? And speaking of which, British comics artist and writer Bryan Hitch proposed the question over on Twitter that now that Reeves has officially cast Pattinson as Bruce/Batman, who should play Pennyworth? And wouldn't you just know it, The Punisher, Firestorm, Power Girl, Vixen, and Ms. Marvel co-creator Gerry Conway voiced his killer opinion, tweeting this great idea.
"Hear me out. Maggie Smith."
Now while some people might take this as some kind of gimmick, I don't take it that way at all. In fact, I think this is one of the best ideas that Reeves and company would be mad to not explore with their new adventures with the Caped Crusader, especially if they cast Maggie Smith. Holy shite, that's excellent casting, right?
But Smith aside, I love this idea. After all, Alfred has always stood in as an emotional surrogate for Wayne's father, Thomas Wayne in many ways. And thus, casting a female Alfred will lend the storytelling to explore Bruce's relationship with his mother, Martha Wayne. And I don't know about you, but I would love to see Bruce Wayne's relationship with his mother explored further in a Batman motion picture. After all, thus far in the Batman movies, we have seen Thomas Wayne get all kinds of character development, while Martha has mostly been regulated to getting shot in the pearl necklace. Time to bring her to the forefront and explore how SHE influenced The Dark Knight.
Since Conway's tweet was sent out into the Twitter-verse, his casting suggestion has garnered almost 20,000 likes, so it seems that more than a few fans think Conway hit the nail on the head with this idea. But what about the name Alfred? Do they change it to Alfreda? Hardly. Actually, Conway later tagged Reeves in a tweet saying that the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War For the Planet of the Apes filmmaker can simply refer to her as "Pennyworth." Works for me!
Other names being thrown around online since Conway suggested Maggie Smith are Judi Dench (Skyfall), Olivia Colman (The Crown), Helen Mirren (Winchester), and Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones). But hell, why not go ahead and swing for the fences and snag Meryl Streep for the role. Personally, I'd love to see Sigourney Weaver take on the part. Too young, you might say. Well, to the surprise of every human on Earth, Weaver is going to be 70 years old this October. Looking good, Ripley!
