While we continue to wait patiently for the arrival of The Batman, you can now listen to the haunting main theme. Released by director Matt Reeves via Twitter, the theme has been written by composer Michael Giacchino, with Reeves revealing that it was written before he “ever shot a frame” of the movie, and that it gave him “chills.” No doubt it will bring out the same reaction in you too.

Building with an ominous atmosphere that will likely be draped over the entire 2-hour 55-minute runtime of The Batman, the clouds of forbode soon part, making way for something surprisingly melancholy. There are hints of the triumphant majesty that is often associated with superhero themes, but for the most part the music remains sinisterly slow in its approach, offering several clues as to how this version of The Dark Knight will be portrayed by both director Matt Reeves and star Robert Pattinson.

Coming courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures and director Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson in the dual role of Gotham City's vigilante detective and his alter ego, reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne. Introducing Batman just two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. Working alongside a few trusted allies, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham's elite, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World's Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin, Carmine Falcone, and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

From the outset, Matt Reeves has aspired to craft a different version of The Dark Knight, with the filmmaker having since compared The Batman’s Bruce Wayne to Kurt Cobain. "That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse. So I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, and the idea of this fictionalized version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor,” Reeves explained. "In that movie you could really feel his vulnerability and desperation, but you could also feel his power,” he continued. “I thought that was a great mix. He’s also got that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.”

Starring Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Jayme Lawson, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell, The Batman is scheduled for release in the United States on March 4, 2022.
