The Batman uses everything at his disposal to spread fear among the criminals of Gotham City, including his voice, and Robert Pattinson has now revealed how he found the appropriate vocals to bring The Dark Knight to life. Speaking at a Q&A, Pattinson and The Batman director Matt Reeves have offered some insight into this latest take on the (sometimes infamous) voice.

"It was a lot of trial and error. I had a lot of time to think about it. I think I was cast about seven or eight months before we started shooting and so I was experimenting with a lot of different things. I think the first two or three weeks, we were kind of doing a variety of different voices, because there's only a couple of lines in the first few scenes we shot. Me and Matt just sort of settled on something. It started to sit in a very particular place and it kind of felt like a progression from other kind of Bat voices and felt kind of somewhat comfortable to do as well."

Pattinson specifically mentions the word “comfortable,” with the actor no doubt learning some valuable lessons from the often painful-sounding notes emitted by previous Christian Bale’s gravelly Bat-voice. A subject of much-mockery during his tenure as Batman, Pattinson evidently looked at previous performances of the voice in order to best approach his own portrayal of the DC icon, efforts which have so far earned him much approval from fans. Efforts that gradually got much easier thanks to the Batsuit.

"The more you embody the suit, the more you embody the character. It just started to come out quite organically. And, I think that's kind of what I was trying to do with the character, as well. I was trying to think, 'He's not putting on a voice.' He puts on the suit and then the voice just starts happening for him as a person as well."

The Batman director Matt Reeves went on to reveal that he and Pattinson explored several different interpretations of the voice that would emulate from beneath the cowl, with the filmmaker amazed at how low Pattinson could go. "I have to say that one of the amazing — many amazing things about Rob — is he has such incredible technical control of himself, of his instrument," Reeves said. "He could do things with his voice, it was a crazy thing. I was like going, 'Oh, you can go lower.' And then he would. I was like, that's amazing."

Reeves continued to heap praise on the talents of his leading man adding, "He went through this process of searching for where it felt like that voice should sit. He has an incredible ear for mimicry and accents. He can pick up anyone's accent. There's no dialect coach."

The Batman stars Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell alongside Robert Pattinson, and will introduce audiences to an early of Batman as he attempts to tackle serial killer The Riddler.
