Vengeance has arrived in the latest TV spot for Warner Bros.'s upcoming comic book movie outing, The Batman. Shared by MovieTrailers Entertainment, the footage gives us a further glimpse at director Matt Reeves’ beautifully film noir-infused take on The Dark Knight and promises an exciting cinematic outing as Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) slips on the iconic cape and cowl and embarks on his personal vendetta against the Gotham underworld.

The Batman has been described as “an edgy, action-packed thriller” that will introduce Batman during his early years as a mask-wearing vigilante. Inexperienced and angry, Bruce Wayne is struggling to balance rage with righteousness as he investigates a disturbing mystery that has terrorized Gotham. This latest footage gives us another look at the instigator of the mystery, well-known supervillain The Riddler, teasing the taunts that the killer will use to torment The Batman as he faces his toughest challenge yet.

Actor Paul Dano has recently offered some insight into this much darker version of The Riddler. Far from the bright green suit-wearing rogue of the pages of DC Comics, the character will instead take inspiration from the likes of Se7en and the real-life Zodiac Killer. “I liked how both grounded and big this film is at the same time,” Dano said. “So there are some grounding forces like the Zodiac Killer, right? But it’s still The Batman, and for me it’s much bigger, so it was important to let my imagination react to the script, rather than strictly basing it on a serial killer.”

Directed by Matt Reeves, who has written the screenplay with Peter Craig, The Batman has brought together a stellar cast, with Tenet and The Lighthouse star Robert Pattinson leading the pack as Bruce Wayne/Batman. It has already been said that Robert Pattinson will deliver a raw, intense portrayal of a disillusioned, desperate version of the DC superhero, who is awakened by the realization that the anger consuming him makes him no better than the ruthless serial killer he’s hunting.

Alongside him are Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) as Selina Kyle; Paul Dano (Love & Mercy, 12 Years a Slave) as Edward Nashton; Jeffrey Wright (No Time to Die, Westworld) as the GCPD's James Gordon; John Turturro (the Transformers films, The Plot Against America) as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent Seven, Interrogation) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; with Andy Serkis (the Planet of the Apes films, Black Panther) as Alfred; and Colin Farrell (The Gentlemen, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Oswald Cobblepot. The Batman will also reportedly include Eternals star Barry Keoghan, with rumors continuing to claim that he will portray archvillain The Joker.

The Batman is set to open in theaters beginning 2 March 2022 and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, having been delayed from a release date of June 2021 due to the ongoing global circumstances.
