The popularity of the adult animation industry surged after titles such as The Simpsons and King of the Hill took evening programming by storm. They looked past the limits of animation and what the medium constricted itself to and, instead, reinvigorated the art form to reach a greater appeal. Creative teams took advantage of adult animation and it was a more inventive way to produce mature content for the airwaves. This spurred an outpour of animated adult series that were determined to dominate major broadcast companies.

Bob’s Burgers first premiered in 2007, quickly rising through the ranks in popularity. While its premise was familiar to the genre, the show’s assortment of quirky characters gave the series its endearing personality. The Bob's Burgers Movie was initially announced in 2017, though had suffered a series of delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The featured film remained resilient nonetheless and is still determined to reach audiences this year. Here’s everything we know about The Bob’s Burgers Movie so far.

Plot: What The Bob’s Burgers Movie Will Be About

The Bob's Burgers Movie follows the series' traditional method of duality when approaching a plot with multiple arcs. Bob and Linda Belcher, owners of the titular Bob's Burgers restaurant, are to face off against food service-based issues that threaten a ruined summer. Their three children, Tina, Gene, and Louise, investigate a mystery of their own. Through their investigation, they are insistent on saving the family's restaurant from facing peril.

Prior to the trailer's release, the official synopsis shares greater detail about the film's outline. "The Bob's Burgers Movie is an animated, big-screen, musical comedy-mystery-adventure based on the long-running Emmy-winning series," 20th Century Studios noted in their published brief. "The story begins when a ruptured water main creates an enormous sinkhole right in front of Bob's Burgers, blocking the entrance indefinitely and ruining the Belcher's plans for a successful summer. While Bob and Linda struggle to keep the business afloat, the kids try to solve a mystery that could save their family's restaurant. As the dangers mount, these underdogs help each other find hope and fight to get back behind the counter, where they belong."

Designated to run as a full-length feature film, The Bob's Burgers Movie is headed directly for the theaters. The Bob's Burgers Movie director and television series creator Loren Bouchard had mentioned to EW the rationale behind deciding to cinematically release the film and the choice against opting to stream through eligible platforms. "We talked about [streaming] as it pertains to the movie and we decided we really want the movie to come out in theaters because Bob's Burgers is already on TV," Bouchard said, "Of course, we want everyone to be able to safely see it in movie theaters. We don't want anyone to put themselves at risk. But assuming there's a point at which everyone can go back to theaters safely, we're excited about Bob's The Movie being seen in the theater, in the dark with other people, because that's something we've never been able to do before. That's the main course that we're delivering to people, in this case."

20th Century Studios confirmed an updated (and hopefully, final) release date after The Bob's Burgers Movie's fate was unclear since the film's development was announced to the public. There was a lack of certainty if Disney would proceed with releasing the film as it was subject to setbacks and false cancelations. A teaser poster posted on Twitter by the film studio promised a new release date for Memorial Day Weekend 2022. The Bob's Burgers Movie will "get this patty started" and land "in flippin' theaters" on May 27, 2022.
