Amazon's hit series The Boys will soon be further expanded with a spinoff series focusing on young superheroes in training, and while the show will primarily follow a new cast, we can expect to see some familiar faces. Three seasons in on Prime Video, The Boys has risen as one of the most popular offerings of Amazon's streaming platform. The show will soon start filming its fourth season amid its continued popularity.

It was previously announced that more of that universe will be explored in The Boys: Varsity. Showrunner Eric Kripke spoke out about the show in a new interview with Deadline and confirmed that the spinoff will indeed be crossing over with the main series in some ways, though he couldn't name any specific characters who might appear. Kripke also states that the spinoff takes place during the third season of The Boys heading into season 4, meaning characters like Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) could very well show up.

"There’s definitely crossover, and we’re doing our best to design a universe that sees some of the issues and storylines in Season 3 hand off to the first season in Varsity. Like there’s a presidential campaign happening in the background of that season, and there’s certain things that are happening at that school that are both in reaction to Season 3 of The Boys. There’s Soldier Boy, etcetera, but also some new storylines that are happening in that season of the spinoff that we have to pick up and take into Season 4 of the show.

The Boys Spinoff Is Based on College-Set X-Men Parody G-Men

To expand the world of The Boys, the Varsity spinoff will take aim at Marvel's X-Men. Its inspiration is the G-Men, a superhero group from The Boys comic books that parodies the X-Men characters. The spinoff will follow young superheroes in training as they learn to properly use their powers as led by a leader who serves as the show's version of Professor X. Kripke also spoke about how he has a greater respect for Kevin Feige now that he knows the challenges of building a cinematic universe.

"I mean, it’s a very different corner of the world and it’s a different concern and thematic but it has been interesting. I give Kevin Feige a lot of credit because now that we’re dipping our toe into trying to build a universe and trying to do it well I mean, the amount that you end up trying to not just telling the same mega story, and it’s hard enough to keep one fucking show straight but to try to keep two shows straight, have them each be entertaining and their own animal but they still lock together like Voltron or something is a whole new layer of challenge that."

You can watch all three seasons of The Boys on Prime Video. The show has been renewed for a fourth season but it's unclear when new episodes will arrive. The Boys: Varsity does not yet have a premiere date.
