The Boys may create some controversy with its over-the-top content, but despite any questionable scenes involving sea animals and Chace Crawford's The Deep, PETA is completely okay with the series. The organization, which is an acronym for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, released a statement at PETA.org praising the Prime Video series along with Crawford, showrunner Eric Kripke, and the special effects team.

PETA also stated that they are honoring those named with the "Tech, Not Terror" award. This recognizes the "cruelty-free" approach to a "thought-provoking scene" involving a CGI octopus and Crawford in a recent episode of The Boys' third season. The scene in question (SPOILER ALERT) depicts Crawford's The Deep being forced to eat an octopus, someone he sees as a friend. It's not the first time The Deep has been featured involved in a scene involving an animal's death. But PETA appreciates how The Boys team used CGI rather than use a real octopus for filming.

Kripke was also praised for noting in an interview that the octopus "didn't deserve the cruel fate of being eaten raw." PETA states that this is a fate that's all too real for many octopuses, noting that billions of invertebrates are killed for food each year. The org stands against the killing and consumption of octopuses, describing them as highly intelligent creatures who are known to caress, kiss, and "communicate to each other using patterns and colors. They use tools, can unscrew jar lids, and have the capacity to feel bored. Those held in captivity have even attempted to escape and squirted their captors with water."

"The Boys' real heroes are working behind the scenes, creating a realistic CGI octopus so that animals can live in peace," PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in the statement. "PETA is celebrating this series for helping viewers see every octopus as an individual like Timothy, not as an entrée or as entertainment."

PETA Has Condemned Jackass Forever for Using Live Animals

Jackass Forever
Paramount Pictures

Using a CGI octopus was good to see for PETA after the org recently condemned Jackass Forever for going in the opposite direction. That movie featured Johnny Knoxville and pals taking part in dangerous pranks and stunts that involved live animals, including a bull, a snake, and honeybees. PETA had urged filmgoers against going out to see the film and called for a criminal probe into the Jackass Forever filmmakers for alleged animal cruelty.

"If Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville want to make a career out of nasty little boy fantasies, they're entitled to, as long as they don't stress, harm, poke, prod, scare, or bother animals who are used as living props for their idiocy," Lange said in a statement at the time. "PETA is reminding city and county prosecutors that no one is above the law and that while the rest of the world wants to save bees and recognizes animals as sentient individuals, these jackasses exploit and abuse them for fun."

The Boys is streaming on Prime Video.
