We’ll be learning much more about the history of Vought’s superheroes in the third season of The Boys. After two successful seasons on Prime Video, there is a lot of anticipation from fans for season 3 to arrive with production on the new episodes now wrapped up. Many fans are especially interested in seeing the arrival of Supernatural star Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, one of Vought’s very first created supes.

Showrunner Eric Kripke recently spoke with The Illuminerdi about what fans can expect from Ackles and the rest of the cast in The Boys season 3. He says how the other new supes introduced in season 3 will also be bringing something to the table, as Soldier Boy comes as part of a team called Payback. This is basically the original super squad of superheroes assembled in the decades before the Seven was established with Homelander leading his own group.

“I mean all of them [are important]! I mean I think they all get amazing things to do. I mean season 3’s fun because it’s not just about Soldier Boy, but it’s about the team he was a part of which is called Payback. And Laurie Holden plays Crimson Countess and there’s a bunch of other heroes who are amazing. So, sort of seeing who was the Seven before the Seven. And what was life like for Vought? In the history of Vought what was it like in the 60s and 70s and 80s? To dig into the history of the world, not just the present has been a lot of fun.”

We’ve gotten to learn a little bit about the history of Vought in previous episodes. Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito) once explained a big chunk of Vought’s past to Homelander (Antony Starr), revealing how the company founder, Frederick Vought, had worked to help create Compound V during World War II. Stormfront (Aya Cash) later divulged more about Vought’s connections to the Nazis before she was publicly exposed for her own connections and exiled from the Seven. While the new season will be dealing more with Vought's history, it's unclear if Aya Cash will return.

Kripke has previously teased that Homelander doesn’t exactly respect those who came before him, as he’s not a fan of Soldier Boy. Before it was Homelander serving as perhaps the world’s most famous superhero, it was Soldier Boy leading the charge, essentially serving as the “John Wayne of superheroes.” This will probably create some friction when both alpha males are crossing paths, as Homelander would no doubt prefer to keep the spotlight on himself rather than yesterday’s superheroes.

“I think anyone expecting Jensen to show up and be a good guy, they will be disappointed,” Kripke previously told Variety. “In the comics he’s mostly just kind of bumbling and subservient to Homelander, I would say. As we’re writing him in this, we’re getting to really talk about the history of Vought because he’s like John Wayne: He’s one of these guys that’s been around for decades of Vought history. And he was Homelander before Homelander, so he’s from a different era, but he’s got the ego and the ambition — it just comes across in a different way because he’s from a different time.”

We don’t yet have a premiere date for season 3 of The Boys, but fans can watch the first two seasons streaming on Prime Video. This news comes to us from The Illuminerdi.
