After a lot of waiting since the series' announcement way back in November 2017, we have finally be gifted with an in depth look at Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's small screen adaptation of Garth Ennis' comic book run, The Boys. Beginning in 2006 and ending in 2008, The Boys was first published by Wildstorm comics before moving to Dynamite Entertainment and was nominated for several awards during its run, including the much-coveted Eisner Award.

The book, and similarly the adaptation from what we have been shown, drops us into a world in which superheroes exist but are perhaps not as righteous as we have come to expect. Having achieved a celebrity status that would make even the Kardashian's jealous, these government regimented superpowered heroes have become corrupted by their status and influence and have, quite frankly, become rather disturbed. To counter this, and keep these spandex-wearing false-gods in check are a CIA squad known informally as 'The Boys'. Tasked with monitoring the superhero community and keeping their reckless, deplorable behaviours to a minimum, The Boys are made up of five members, Billy Butcher, Mother's Milk, The Frenchman, The Female and the new guy Hughie Campbell.

Once the wonderfully nicknamed newbie 'Wee' Hughie joins the group, what follows is the cavalcade of overt blood-and-guts violence and bizarrely extreme sexuality that is often associated with the works of Ennis as The Boys navigate through the politics and brutality of this nightmarish world.

A big screen adaptation of The Boys had been floated and reached various stages of development at both Columbia and Paramount Pictures from 2008 all the way until 2016, before it was announced that Amazon Video would go ahead with a small screen adaption, giving the production a series order for a first season which consisting of eight episodes. Whilst Rogen and Goldberg had to drop out of directing duties due to scheduling conflicts, 10 Cloverfield Lane's Dan Trachtenberg will step in to helm the first episode.

The teaser sees The Boys leader Billy Butcher, played by geek hero Karl Urban, outlining to Hughie the 'diabolical' superheroes that need a 'spank' amidst images of some of these diabolical actions these superheroes get up to. Clearly, this is not a superhero adventure for children.

Interestingly, it sounds as if Urban will keep the British accent associated with his character (which he has hopefully improved since the actor's peculiar take in Thor: Ragnarok), whereas 'Wee' Hughie seems to have dropped the Scottish accent, which is sure to disappoint the hardcore fans. Perhaps his father, who is set to be played by Simon Pegg, will placate them by maintaining the Scottish drawl he has already demonstrated as Scotty in the Star Trek films. His casting has already gone some way to please the fans of the book as Hughie's dashing looks were originally based on the actor himself as he appeared twenty years ago.

The Boys is set to premiere on July 26 2019 on Amazon Prime, and has been developed by Preacher's Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg alongside Supernatural's Eric Kripke. This trailer comes direct from Amazon.
