The CW has just announced that it plans to cancel the long-running sitcom Girlfriends. According to Variety, the CW is in negotiations with creator and executive producer Mara Brock Akil to air a retrospective special featuring the show's cast.

Girlfriends first aired on UPN in September of 2000 and then moved to the CW when the network launched in 2006. The soon-to-be missed hit sitcom lasted for eight years and produced 172 episodes.

The CW has not announced what they plan to replace Girlfriends with.
