In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage say that Gossip Girl will launch a spinoff for The CW.

This new show will be a sequel to the original and it will look at the formative years of Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) in Los Angeles in the 1980s.

In addition to this the CW wants "a backdoor pilot for the project." This will be aired as an actual episode of Gossip Girl on May 11.

The plan is for the 1980s to begin as a flashback that intercuts with the stories of Lily and her daughter Serena (Blake Lively).

Schwartz and Savage are writing this spinoff. It will focus on the young Lily who leaves her parents home and moves in with her sister. Lily soon gets caught up in the world of Hollywood. She then meets musician Rufus Humphrey and ends up getting pregnant.

Casting for the pilot has already begun.
