Ghost House Pictures has hired director Mike Newell to helm their upcoming sci-fi adventure The Day of the Triffids.

Based on John Wyndam's 1951 sci-fi horror novel, the film is set in a world where a shower of comets blinds the world's population. It's up to a group of people that were not effected by the event to take down alien plants, known as triffids, on a mission to destroy mankind.

Mike Newell is directing from a script by Neil Cross. Mark Gordon, Michael Preger, Don Murphy are partnering with Ghost House's Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert to produce.

The book was previously adapted in 1962 and was turned into a miniseries starring Dougray Scott and Joely Richardson in 2009. No production schedule has been released.
