Netflix disappointed fans across the world time and again as they canceled their Defendersverse shows one by one, but we may not have seen the last of The Defenders yet. As many fans know, the Marvel shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones were all set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sharing a continuity with the Avengers movies. Now, according to a new report, Marvel is looking to incorporate some or all of these superheroes in upcoming MCU movies. However, they cannot be used until their lease with Netflix expires, which would be two years past the final release of new episodes. Because Jessica Jones premiered its final season just last month, this would mean we wouldn't see the Defenders in the MCU until the summer of 2021 at the earliest.

Because there's still plenty of time to iron out the details, there's not a concrete plan yet in place for how to bring in the Defenders to the movies. It's expected that they would first start appearing in the New York based MCU movies, such as Doctor Strange 2 or Spider-Man 3. The plan is reportedly to bring in each of the characters one by one rather than introducing all of the Defenders at once, which could mean seeing Luke Cage in one movie and Jessica Jones in another. It's also a possibility they all could appear together in the rumored New Avengers movie, even if some of them first show up in other projects by themselves.

It is worth noting that The Punisher is exempt from the two-year clause prohibiting its continuation elsewhere. This is because it was developed as a spin-off of Marvel's Daredevil and wasn't structured into Marvel's original deal with Netflix. Of course, this would suggest that Frank Castle could be the first of the Marvel characters from Netflix to one day appear in an MCU movie. Still, although he would be potentially the first character from the Defendersverse to cross over into the movie side of the MCU, there are currently no plans officially in place to bring Frank into a new project anytime soon.

The other shows that make up the Defendersverse include Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist. The four also got together for a season of The Defenders. As each series wound up officially getting canceled one by one, rumors began to circulate that some or all of the shows could wind up continuing elsewhere, perhaps on Hulu or on Disney+. While that still remains a possibility of something that could happen in the future, it seems more likely at this point they would first show up in MCU movies if these new reports are accurate.

It does feel like the characters from the Defendersverse will eventually show up on the movie side of the MCU, even if it takes a very long time. For fans of the Netflix shows, seeing it finally happen would truly be an incredible moment. As of now, however, all we can do is speculate. This information comes to us from We Got This Covered.
