Following the recent shock cancelation of Batgirl, DC fans could soon face more disappointment as Warner Bros. Pictures weigh up what to do about The Flash amid the ongoing controversies surrounding its central star, Ezra Miller. Coming courtesy of a report by THR, the studio is reportedly deciding what the ultimate fate of The Flash will be, with “a source with knowledge of the situation” revealing that it has come down to three scenarios.

The first option is to allow Miller to seek professional help, something which the actor will reportedly do while accompanied by their mother at their farm in Vermont. Presuming that this helps Miller, the plan is for the actor to appear in an interview and explain the erratic behavior that they have exhibited over the past several months. Behavior which includes disorderly conduct, assault, burglary and accusations of grooming minors. Miller would then do limited press appearances for The Flash, with the movie being released as planned.

The second scenario will occur should Miller refuse to seek help. The report states that Warner Bros. would still release The Flash, but that Miller would play a limited role in terms of press appearances and marketing. No easy task when Miller is playing the title character. This option would also result in the role of Barry Allen AKA the Flash being recast going forward.

Finally, the third option, and no doubt the one least desired by both DC fans and Warner Bros., would see The Flash canceled. Where it would likely be put into the same vault that Batgirl now gathers dust in. With Miller’s prominent role in The Flash, it would be near-impossible to reshoot their role in the same way that other projects have under similar circumstances. Certainly, Warner Bros. will not be rushing to merely cancel a $200 million movie.

Should The Flash be pulled from release, this would be the second of Michael Keaton’s planned returns as Batman to never see the light of day. Which would be more than disappointing enough all on its own.

The Flash is Expected to Act as a Partial Reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe

Warners and new parent company Warner Bros. Discovery had no doubt hoped to avoid making any hard decisions about The Flash, what with the movie not set for release until next year. However, now that Miller has been charged with a felony burglary, and with Vermont’s child services department now involved, it’s becoming harder and harder for the studio to ignore the behavior of its star.

The Flash is expected to act a semi-reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe, with Barry Allen traveling back in time to prevent his mother's murder. An action that brings unintended consequences to the timeline. This very element, and the introduction of the multiverse, could theoretically solve some of Warner Bros. problem for them, with The Flash being recast as a result of the fallout. That is, if The Flash ever makes it to the big screen, of course.

Since its conception, which began all the way back in 2016, The Flash has been met with all manner of drama behind-the-scenes. Multiple delays have been caused by several director changes and the pandemic, and now with Miller’s illegal actions, it seems more and more like the universe does not want us to ever see The Flash happen.

Directed by Andy Muschietti and starring Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, Sasha Calle, and Ben Affleck, The Flash is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 23, 2023.
