Kiefer Sutherland will soon be chasing someone on the run, as the 24 star is reportedly leading the cast of a remake of The Fugitive. Originally a 1960s TV drama, it was later turned into a successful 1993 movie starring Harrison Ford. This new version will be a TV series for Quibi, and Sutherland has been cast in the lead role of Detective Clay Bryce.

Co-starring with Kiefer Sutherland will be Boyd Holbrook as Mike Ferro, a fugitive on the run in a role similar to the one originally played by Ford. Stephen Hopkins has also signed on to direct the project in addition to serving as an executive producer.

The series will be very similar in many ways to The Fugitive, although it will be set in the modern era. Some of the other key differences include different names for the lead characters. In the 1993 movie, Dr. Richard Kimble (Ford) is wrongfully convicted for the murder of his wife, so he escapes from custody after a bus-train wreck to seek the real murderer. Tommy Lee Jones also starred as a U. S. Marshal hot on his tail, a role he reprised in the spin-off U.S. Marshals. By contrast, here's the logline for the new series.

"When a bomb rips through the Los Angeles subway train he's riding on, blue-collar Mike Ferro (Holbrook) just wants to make sure his wife, Allison, and 10-year-old daughter, Pearl, are safe. But the faulty evidence on the ground and "tweet-now, confirm-later" journalism paint a nightmarish picture: it looks to all the world that Mike was responsible for the heinous act. Wrongfully-and very publicly-accused, Mike must prove his innocence by uncovering the real perpetrator, before the legendary cop (Sutherland) heading the investigation can apprehend him."

Directed by Andrew Davis and written by David Twohy and Jeb Stuart, The Fugitive was a tremendous hit at the box office when it was released in 1993. The movie pulled in nearly $370 million against a budget of $44 million. Additionally, critics loved it as well, and filmgoers consider it to be one of Ford's most memorable movies. The movie was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, with Jones winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Its popularity later brought about a spin-off movie, the spoof movie Wrongfully Accused with Leslie Nielsen, and a short-lived TV series reboot in 2000 (which CBS cancelled after one season).

While the 1993 movie is clearly the most well-known iteration of The Fugitive, it is actually a remake itself of the 1960's TV series of the same name. In the classic show, Richard Janssen plays Dr. Richard Kimble, similarly wrongfully charged in the death of his wife and sentenced to be executed. Kimble escapes and embarks on a cross-country search for the real killer with the authorities constantly in pursuit. The show ran for four seasons between 1963 and 1967, consisting of 120 episodes.

Most of us can agree that the original movie is a classic, so let's hope this new TV series version does it justice. With Sutherland in the lead, the project appears to be in good hands. This news comes to us from Variety.
