The Good Fight will end with its upcoming sixth season. The legal drama stars Christine Baranski as defense attorney Diane Lockhart. The Good Fight is a spinoff of The Good Wife, where Baranski appeared as a central character during the show’s seven-season run. This marks the end of a 13-year collaboration between show creators and executive producers Michelle and Robert King and the actress.

In a joint statement, the Kings said:

“We’ve loved fighting The Good Fight these last six seasons. To be able to tell stories about an upside-down world in real time has been a gift. And to have worked with these talented, brilliant, generous actors, writers and crew has been a blessing. Our hope-slash-scheme is to find ways to work with all of them again in the future.”

The Good Fight follows Lockhart after financial repercussions from a Ponzi scheme force her and colleague Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie) out of their firm. They then join a prominent African American-owned law firm known for taking on police brutality cases in Illinois. The Good Fight is a critically acclaimed series that has been commended for how it tackles real-life issues. The final season is set to continue its exploration of extremist violence and other complex topics.

The show debuted in February 2017, following the election of former President Donald Trump. The Kings drew inspiration from issues that arose during Trump's presidency to create episodes that reflected real-time conflict.

“We did feel like after January 6, there was a certain number of stories we wanted to tell. And then Michelle and I were thinking about what was coming up, and we decided that this year that we were doing this kind of violent, Civil War year would create a very good ending for all the characters,” Robert King said.

The Good Fight season 6 also stars John Slattery, Sarah Steele, Michael Boatman, Nyambi Nyambi, Charmaine Bingwa, with Audra McDonald and Andre Braugher. Phil Alden Robinson created The Good Fight alongside the Kings. Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, Liz Glotzer, William Finkelstein, Jonathan Tolins, Jacquelyn Reingold and Christine Baranski serve as executive producers. The series is produced by CBS Studios in association with Scott Free Productions and King Size Productions.

Production for the final 10-episode season is currently underway. Season six premieres on September 8 on Paramount+.

About The Good Wife

The cast of The Good Wife
CBS

Through its successful seven-series run, The Good Wife introduced the audience to Christine Lockhart. The Chicago-based series starred Julianna Margulies as Alicia Florrick, whose life is turned upside down after the revelation that her politician husband is caught in a sex scandal. This forces Florrick to revisit her law career to provide for her family.

The Good Wife was critically acclaimed and the recipient of five Emmys, with Marguiles taking home the lead actress in a drama award twice. It was the 2014 winner of the Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama.

While multiple characters from The Good Wife have made appearances on The Good Fight, Marguiles has never appeared and there are no current plans for a season six guest spot.

Show creators Michelle and Robert King are also behind the CBS supernatural drama Evil, and serving as executive producers for the second season of Your Honor and game show Would I Lie to You.
