The cherished adventure comedy The Goonies is getting a remake courtesy of Disney+ — with a twist. Thanks to a partnership between Disney+, The Donner Company, and Amblin, The Goonies will return, sort of, as a new series follows a group of young, aspiring filmmakers who attempt to remake the beloved Richard Donner movie on a shoe-string budget. In an interview with Variety, producer Gail Berman has now revealed several details behind the series, including the inspiration behind the project.

"This is a partnership between me, Amblin, and Lauren Shuler Donner. When I was at Paramount, there were these young boys doing this movie about Raiders of the Lost Ark, a shot-by-shot remake. It got some press at the time, and the studio was very upset about it. I thought it was an amazing idea, and it always stood in my head of — how can you take an idea like that and turn it into a TV series?"

The Goonies remake project has been planned for some time, and after falling through at Fox, has now been moved to Disney+. Now titled Our Time (referencing a memorable, inspirational speech from the movie), the series is being written by Sarah Watson, is compared by producer Gail Berman to the likes of the NBC show Friday Night Lights.

"We needed a terrific writer and great partners, so we brought the idea to Amblin and those guys loved it. Sarah Watson is our creator. The series is a story of a town and a family in the lens of Friday Night Lights, and within that they tell a story of a shot-by-shot remake of The Goonies. We had to go to Warner Bros., to Toby Emmerich, and ask if we could have rights. They said yes, obviously, because of Mr. Spielberg and the Donners. We're now doing this for Disney Plus."

Our Time was initially set for release on Fox, but after reportedly finding the series to be “too young” for its usual demographic, The Goonies project instead found a home at Disney+. Our Time should be a great reminder of the wonder of the original movie, as those who hold The Goonies close see themselves reflected in the characters eagerly trying to recreate the adventure. The series comes following the recent death of the late, great Richard Donner, so expect to see many a deserved tribute paid to the man behind The Goonies.

The Goonies (1985)
Warner Bros. Pictures

Released way back in 1985, The Goonies is the product of several legends all coming together to create a tale of adventure and family. Directed by Richard Donner from a screenplay by Chris Columbus and based on a story by Steven Spielberg, The Goonies follows a group of kids who live in the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon. They must come together to attempt to save their homes from foreclosure and, in doing so, discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate.

Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Jonathan Ke Huy Quan, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and John Matuszak, The Goonies is available to stream on HBO Max. Our Time does not yet have a release date, but will land on Disney+.
