After barely surviving the events of The Gray Man, Sierra Six will be back for another action-packed mission. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is moving forward with a sequel to one of the most expensive films ever produced by the streamer. Joe and Anthony Russo are set to return to direct the follow-up, which will be written by Stephen McFeely, who helped pen the script of the first film. In front of the camera, Ryan Gosling will be reprising the role of Sierra Six, but no other casting details are known at this time. Given that Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Rege-Jean Page, and Julia Butters all made it out of the first film, any one of their characters is fair game to appear in the sequel.
In addition to a direct follow-up to The Gray Man, a spin-off film in the same universe is also reportedly in development. Not much is known about the additional project, except that it will be written by Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. There are any number of directions that the spin-off film could take, whether it be a prequel following the early days of the Sierra program, or maybe even an origin story for Chris Evans' villainous Lloyd Hanson. A feature film centered on Ana de Armas' Agent Miranda would also be an exciting option, as No Time to Die showed the actress certainly has the capabilities to lead an action franchise. Netflix is clearly hoping to strike gold by building out the world of The Gray Man in future projects.
The Gray Man Has Seemingly Been a Success for Netflix
While it's a little difficult to determine how successful The Gray Man has been, there are a few metrics that show Netflix subscribers were enthusiastic about the film. Despite having a less than stellar 48% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is a much more positive 91% from more than 100 verified reviewers. In addition, Netflix is touting that The Gray Man debuted as the number one film in 92 countries this past weekend, though specific streaming numbers are currently unavailable. The film did receive a limited theatrical release, but Netflix doesn't report theatrical grosses for its titles that are put out in theaters. Regardless of what it's considering, Netflix has seen enough positive buzz for The Gray Man to warrant moving forward with more films in the same universe.
The sequel to The Gray Man will be produced under the Russo's AGBO banner, which has been behind such films as 21 Bridges, Cherry, and Extraction, the latter of which is also being turned into a franchise for Netflix. It's unknown when production will begin on the next Gray Man film or when it's expected to be released. In the meantime, The Gray Man, starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Ana de Armas, is now streaming on Netflix.
