The Great British Bake Off, or The Great British Baking Show as it’s known in the colonies, is ready to kick off its 10th season on television. It’s already been released in the UK and will come to Netflix for US audiences this week. We’re all excited to get another look at the baking challenges in this long-running feel-good competition where we all want everyone to win. There is huge anticipation to have the hosts and judges return as twelve new contestants take to the ovens to prove themselves and their dough.

The Great British Baking Show will return on Friday with a brand new 10-week baking competition. Our favorite stars, Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, will be back to judge the contest. And strange comedians Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas will be hosting as usual. This season of the Baking Show promises to be an exciting one with a varied range of contestants coming from all walks of life that you’d never guess would inspire a passion for baking.

Regardless, the eager oven-lovers are out to become breadwinners of their own design in this creative competition of cookery. There will be many challenges as in each episode, we will see three different types of baking as The Great British Baking Show returns.

Season 10 Contestants

This season’s challengers come from a wide range of professions and places all over England. Some of them have jobs that seem not to fit the title of a baker at all, but each brings a unique approach to the culinary skill. You wouldn’t find many of these people in traditional kitchens, but for the next ten weeks, they’ll each be given the opportunity to show their stuff to Prue and Paul.

Abdul is an electronics engineer from London that was known for experimenting with electrical appliances since he was young. He loves matcha and says his interest in baking began when his graduate colleagues started baking for each other to make their coffee breaks more interesting. He applies a scientific approach to baking, focusing on the chemistry of his creations.

Carole is a supermarket cashier from Dorset. She has a segment on a local radio show called “Compost Carole,” wherein she shares her extensive gardening knowledge with listeners. She discovered her love of baking when she first baked a birthday cake for her granddaughter and has taught herself the skill using YouTube videos ever since. Fruity and punchy flavors are her favorite.

Dawn is an IT manager from Bedfordshire. She loves to challenge herself with illusion cakes (those cakes that look like real things but are actually just cakes). She appreciates good attention to detail and a high level of intricacy. Her favorite flavors are nuts, salted caramel, and lemon.

James is a nuclear scientist from Cumbria. James grew up in Glasgow and moved to England after he went to college. He loves the technical side of baking and has been practicing the skill since he was a child. He brings a “child-friendly horror” style to his bakes. He loves mixed spices, apple flavors, and caramel.

Janusz is a teacher’s assistant who lives in East Sussex. He emigrated from Poland to the UK 10 years ago and now lives with his boyfriend on the southeast coast of England. He bakes every Saturday to remember his mother, who first inspired him to bake. His style is “cartoon-like colorful, and camp.” He loves using Polish ingredients, and his favorite flavors are ginger and chocolate.

Season 10 Challenges

The show will remain in the same format as previous baking show seasons. Each episode will be divided into three challenges. The signature challenge will come first, letting contestants show their own interpretation of a dish. The technical challenge is second, demanding that bakers all follow one surprise recipe to the best of their ability. This bake is often more difficult than usual because of how the recipes are worded. Finally, we have the showstopper challenge, in which each baker must create a showstopping delight.
