Hulu announced on Tuesday that The Great will return for a third season. The show’s 2nd season aired on November 19th, 2021, on Hulu with all 10 episodes. Being one of the website’s top-performing original comedies, this is no surprise at all. Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult will return as Catherine the Great and Emperor Peter III, respectively. Their supporting court and fellow helpers are Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow will return as well as series regulars.

Season 2 of The Great took off as Catherine took control of the Russian throne and became Catherine the Great, also known as Empress Catherine, after a messy coup that resulted in her husband Peter’s dethroning and the murder of Catherine’s lover, Leo. During the season, Catherine will learn that running a country while trying to mobilize a new and innovative Russia is no easy task for a pregnant woman. She faces many battles, such as her court, her team, and even her own conniving mother, played by Gillan Anderson. Lastly, the biggest battle of them all, falling in love with the one person she claimed to dethrone and kill, Peter. The season 2 finale left viewers in awe when Catherine tried to kill Peter, however, injuring his lookalike instead. The scene concluded with Catherine clinging on to Peter and both wondering how to go on from here. Although there wasn’t much of a cliffhanger, unless you count a bunch of people from Catherine and Peter’s court getting arrested, viewers sure can’t wait to see what happens between the two lovers/rulers in the next season.

“We end the [second] season with everyone in a very, very different place,” series creator Tony McNamara said to Entertainment Weekly. “I guess the third season is very much about the court and about the next level of leadership for Catherine, and Peter deciding what sort of guy he’s ultimately going to be.”

The Great is created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara and executive produced by Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Fanning, Hoult, Echo Lake’s Brittany Kahan Ward, Doug Mankoff, and Andrew Spaulding, Thruline’s Josh Kesselman and Ron West, and Matt Shakman. The show is loosely based on the rise to power of Catherine the Great, Empress of All Russia. The series was nominated for Best Television Series at the 2021 and 2022 Golden Globes along with a nomination for Fanning and Hoult- along with 2 Primetime Emmy nominations and Critics Choice Award nominations as well. The series won a Writer’s Guild Award for episodic comedy in 2020.

A release date for the third season has not been announced, but you can catch up on Seasons 1 and 2 streaming now on Hulu.
