A24 Pictures is bringing one of the biggest critical hits of this year, The Green Knight, back to theaters this Friday. The film starring Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, Lion) along with Joel Edgerton, Alicia Viaknder, Sean Harris, and Ralph Ineson in the eponymous role; and helmed by David Lowrey (Pete’s Dragon, A Ghost Story), made headlines this year when it was released to rave reviews; however, was met with a divided response from fans and was also affected by the pandemic.

Despite that, A24 is dedicated to promoting Patel’s graceful and determined performance and has decided to release the film back in theaters for a second run starting December 10. This also comes as a surprise as The Green Knight has been already made available for online streaming and physical purchase. The film will be screened in select theaters, clashing the film’s second innings with the holiday season.

A24 released a Christmas-themed teaser video of clippings from the film to officially make The Green Knight a Christmas movie; the video also featured Christmas bell music to go with the theme. The Green Knight is the story of King Arthur’s reckless nephew, Sir Gawain, who embarks on a quest to find and confront the gigantic Green Knight, known for testing men.

The film, however, explored much more complex themes and gave the audience a one-of-kind experience with its unconventional though impactful imagery and its poetic interpretation of life via a medieval legend. It focuses on Gawain’s learning of life through these new experiences which makes the movie much more thought-provoking.

A24’s decision to release the film before the year’s end could also be to strengthen its chances at this year’s awards season, mainly for the Oscars buzz. A24 Pictures have previously received multiple nominations at various ceremonies, including 26 Academy Award nominations; eventually winning one Best Picture for Moonlight. And even though the plan doesn’t work out for the awards, The Green Knight re-release could be another chance for the viewers to watch this experience in the way movies are supposed to be watched. Earlier this year, the studio organized a one-day online screening for the film as well.

The Green Knight currently holds an 89% rating on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes and the audience reception may go up with this re-release. The Green Knight releases December 10 in select AMC theaters, with timing dependent on location.
