I don't know about you but I love a good western. The genre was kind of lost on me throughout most of my life, but then after seeing The Coen Brothers' one-two punch of No Country for Old Men and True Grit I got the western fever and have seen a healthy amount of motion pictures set within the dusty trail of that genre since. Not to mention HBO's Westworld. And so I'm excited about today's news that lets us know none other than Beasts of No Nation and Hobbs & Shaw actor Idris Elba will be leading the charge on a new Netflix western revenge drama The Harder They Fall produced by Jay-Z.
The "all-black Western" will center on Captive State and White Boy Rick star Jonathan Majors as an outlaw named Nat Love, who, upon discovering that the man who killed his parents two decades previously is being released from prison, reunites with his gang to track his enemy down and seek his revenge. Idris Elba will be playing the role of the man who killed Majors' parents all those years back.
The Bullitts singer-songwriter Jeymes Samuel is all set to take the reins of this western, marking his directorial debut. As mentioned above, Jay-Z is producing this new movie along with James Lassiter, Lawrence Bender, and Samuel. And this new film continues Jay-Z's rise as a film producer. The man has already had his hand in quite a few films over the past few years, acting as executive producer on Baz Luhrmann's 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio and Joel Edgerton, co-producer on Chris Rock's Top Five with Rosario Dawson, and producer on Will Gluck's 2014 take on the musical Annie starring Jamie Foxx, Quvenzhané Wallis, and Cameron Diaz.
While there isn't currently word on just when this new Netflix revenge western will be hitting the streaming giant, we can all get our Idris Elba fix elsewhere for the time being as the man is always producing content left and right. Up next for the Prometheus and Pacific Rim actor is Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 writer-director James Gunn's upcoming reboot of Suicide Squad co-starring Margot Robbie. And let's not forget that Elba is no stranger to the western genre as he starred alongside Matthew McConaughey in director Nikolaj Arcel's adaptation of The Shining and Doctor Sleep author Stephen King's novel The Dark Tower back in 2017. While not a conventional western by any means, at least we know by Elba's turn as Roland Deschain aka The Gunslinger, the man knows his way around a six-shooter. Watch out, Jonathan Majors!
And speaking of Majors, he can be seen next as the lead in J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele's upcoming HBO adaptation of Lovecraft Country. Again, there isn't currently word on just when this new Netflix revenge western will be hitting the streaming giant, but stick with us and we will pass along updates as we hear them. In the meantime, this story comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
