Last month, actor Martin Freeman revealed that his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch is joining him in Middle Earth for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. As it turns out, Benedict Cumberbatch actually has two roles in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, portraying Smaug and voicing the Necromancer character.

Benedict Cumberbatch will portray Smaug using motion-capture techniques, which Andy Serkis also utilizes to play Gollum. Smaug is one of the most powerful dragons in Middle Earth, who makes his home at Lonely Mountain. Necromancer is also known as the evil Sauron from the original trilogy. It isn't known how large the Smaug and Necromancer roles are in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

It seems Peter Jackson's cast for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is finally complete. Production is currently under way in New Zealand.
