In the wake of The Lego Movie's massive box office success, Warner Bros. has issued a May 26, 2017 release date for The Lego Movie 2. The Lego Movie has earned just over $200 million worldwide, after just two weeks in theaters. As of now, The Lego Movie 2 doesn't have any direct competition, although the Untitled Marvel Project 2017 will hit theaters a few weeks earlier on May 5, 2017.

We reported earlier this month that Jared Stern (The Internship, The Watch) has been hired to write the screenplay for this sequel with another writer, who has now been identified as Michelle Morgan (Nancy Drew). Roy Lee and Dan Lin are producing, although it isn't clear which cast members are coming back for this follow-up. It also isn't known yet whether or not The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be back at the helm.

The news comes just two days after our report that Warner Bros. is mulling over whether to give the green light to The Lego Movie 2, or their stand-alone animated adventure LEGO Ninjago, which Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman signed on to write the script for in June. It's possible that the studio may still green light LEGO Ninjago, which is set in a world inspired by Japanese and Chinese cultures. The project is based on the LEGO Ninjago toy sets, which spawned the animated TV series Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, created by Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman.
