The Lion King 1 1/2: Sales of the critically acclaimed "The Lion King 1 1/2" have now reached six million combined DVD/VHS units in North America since its release, it was announced today by Bob Chapek, President of Buena Vista Home Entertainment. Based on these sales figures, "The Lion King 1 1/2" is now the best-selling video and DVD so far this year. DVD is growing rapidly, particularly now among the mainstream audiences at exponential rates, with families driving the growth. Sixty percent of households now own a DVD player, making DVD a staple of home entertainment. As the household percentage penetration increases, DVD sales in the family genre have also increased.

"These record-breaking sales solidify the widespread adoption of DVD in the family arena," said Bob Chapek, President of Buena Vista Home Entertainment. "As Disney continues to lead the way in this genre, it's no wonder `The Lion King 1 1/2' has become a benchmark in the growing phenomenon of family DVD."

The two-disc Disney DVD "The Lion King 1 1/2" includes a whole new slate of bonus fun starring the original voice talent, games for all ages, theme-park-ride style virtual safari, music video, behind-the-scenes tours and much more. This hilarious, all-new animated movie starring Timon and his windy pal Pumbaa is available on DVD for $29.99 (S.R.P.) and on VHS for $24.99 (S.R.P.).

The legacy of Disney's "The Lion King" continues with "The Lion King 1 1/2," an uproarious, all-new chapter to the beloved original film. "The Lion King 1 1/2" reunites original voice cast members and features music from Elton John, Tim Rice and Lebo M. Timon and Pumbaa, the greatest unsung heroes of the savanna, provide a hysterical new perspective on the action at Pride Rock and beyond.

Nathan Lane (Timon), Ernie Sabella (Pumbaa) return, with colorful new characters such as Timon's Mom ("The Simpsons" Julie Kavner) and his outrageous Uncle Max (voice by Jerry Stiller of TV's "Seinfeld"). They're joined by Simba (Matthew Broderick), Rafiki (Robert Guillaume), Nala (Moira Kelly), Shenzi (Whoopi Goldberg), Banzai (Cheech Marin) and more in this Pridelands epic.

Running parallel to "The Lion King" yet completely original, "The Lion King 1 1/2" goes back before the beginning and introduces Timon's outrageous family, how he met Pumbaa, and more. The truth about some "passed" events -- such as when King Mufasa introduced his young heir to the animal kingdom -- are finally revealed. Let's just say there was something funny behind that dramatic moment when all the animals bowed to their new ruler! It's a wild side of the Pridelands that you've never seen before. Timon and Pumbaa were there ... and they ain't lion! Produced by George Mendoza. Directed by Bradley Raymond.
